New Delhi:

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh chaired a high-level meeting on Tuesday to review the progress of various infrastructure projects under construction in border areas, particularly in the Ladakh region, officials said.

The meeting took place at a time when the Indian and Chinese armies had been locked in a bitter border deadlock for eight weeks in eastern Ladakh.

Official sources said that the state of current infrastructure projects along the real line of control (LAC), including the Ladakh region, figured prominently at the meeting.

After the deadlock started on May 5, the government asked the BRO to continue its infrastructure projects in eastern Ladakh.

“Border Road Organization’s ongoing infrastructure projects were reviewed at a meeting today. BRO has done a commendable job. The construction of strategic roads, bridges and tunnels in border areas will be accelerated. BRO is working vigorously toward this goal, “Rajnath Singh said on Twitter after the meeting.

In a statement, the Ministry of Defense said that the state of connectivity to border areas had been examined at the meeting and that the constant need to boost ongoing projects and accelerate the construction of strategic roads, bridges and tunnels in border areas had been discussed.

The meeting was attended by Defense Secretary Ajay Kumar and other senior ministry officials, the statement said.

“ A strong increase in the results obtained by BRO (Border Roads Organization) is evident from the fact that BRO performed 30% more work in the 2019-2020 financial year compared to the 2018-19 financial year. BRO worked tirelessly, even during the restrictions. due to COVID-19 without affecting the progress of various projects, “the statement said.

Despite unprecedented snowfall this year, all strategic passes and roads were cleared for traffic about a month before their average annual opening date, he said.
