The Indian Communist Party (M) in Rajasthan on Monday suspended its party deputy Balwan Poonia for one year for disobeying party directives in recent Rajya Sabha state polls.

In the Rajya Sabha elections for three state seats, KC Venugopal and Neeraj Dangi of the Congress, and Rajendra Gehlot of the BJP won, while the second BJP candidate, Onkar Singh Lakhawat, lost.

The CPI (M) had asked its two deputies – Balwan Poonia and Girdhari Lal – to vote against the BJP in the June 19 polls only if there was a chance of winning its second candidate, sources on Monday said CPI (M). .

“But our deputy Balwan Poonia voted although it is obvious that the two candidates for Congress will win comfortably and that the additional candidate of the BJP will lose. In such a situation, Poonia did not need to vote”, a said the party source.

Mr. Poonia, the deputy for the riding of Bhardra (Hanumangarh), voted in favor of the candidate for Congress, while Girdhari Lal did not vote.

Poonia was suspended from the party for a year for disobeying party instructions, the source added.

“A third party notice has been sent to him, requesting an explanation in seven days,” the sources told PTI.

When contacted, Mr. Poonia said he would submit his response to the party.
