Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut says UP police’s treatment of Rahul Gandhi is unacceptable

Bombay:

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut today released a statement against the mismanagement of Rahul Gandhi by the Uttar Pradesh police, saying that if his party could have “disputes” with Congress and that it understood that a “law enforcement situation” existed in the region, the cops’ treatment of a national leader was unacceptable.

“Rahul Gandhi is a national leader. We may have differences with them (Congress), but a national figure from a large family is going to meet someone. The way he was arrested … the way we saw him on television … is unacceptable. His collar was caught and he was pushed to the ground, ”Mr. Raut told ANI News Agency.

“No one can support what happened to him. He is the grandson of Indira Gandhi. He is the son of Rajiv Gandhi. I agree that Article 144 (prohibition orders banning large gatherings) is in effect. place and that there is a situation of law and order … but what happened cannot be supported, ”added Mr. Raut.

Mr Gandhi, who was walking yesterday to the Hathras neighborhood in the UP – where the torture and murder of a 20-year-old Dalit girl sparked national outrage – was arrested in Greater Noida (near Delhi) and briefly detained.

Dramatic footage showed Mr Gandhi, who was accompanied by his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, being pushed by cops and falling to the ground.

“Why are you arresting me? What are the grounds for the arrest? What law am I breaking,” he demanded during the heated exchange with the police who said they ‘accused of “Article 188” – a law on violation of official orders.

The incident was condemned by several political leaders, including Sharad Pawar of the PCN. “The reckless behavior of the UP police towards Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is extremely reprehensible. It is reprehensible for those who are supposed to uphold the law to trample on democratic values in this way,” Mr. Pawar.

Mr. Raut’s Shiv Sena rules Maharashtra in a fragile alliance with the ideologically disparate Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The three formed the government after a fallout between the Sena and longtime allies of the BJP (ruling in the UP) over power-sharing.

However, the relationship between the two (Sena and Congress) remains uneasy, with Mr Gandhi’s comments earlier this year being echoed by the opposition as a sign of contention in the ruling alliance.

“I would like to differentiate here. We support the government of Maharashtra, but we are not the main decision maker … There is a difference between leading the government and supporting it,” he said in response to questions. on Maharashtra. Covid crisis and possible disagreements to deal with it.

Last week, Mr Raut met Devendra Fadnavis, former chief minister of Maharashtra and top BJP leader, in Mumbai, in a meeting he initially called “non-political” and which, within days later he asked “is it a sin to discuss politics?”
