Rahul Gandhi attacked the government over the Hathras affair.

New Delhi:

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who visited Hathras in Uttar Pradesh last week amid outrage over the alleged gang rape of a 20-year-old woman, this morning attacked the chief minister Yogi Adityanath in a tweet. The brutal torture of the 20-year-old Dalit woman sparked outrage across the country; she died in a Delhi hospital last month.

“The shameful truth is that many Indians do not consider Dalits, Muslims and Tribals to be human. The CM and its police say no one has been raped because for them, and for many other Indians, she was NO ONE (sic), “the ex-congressman wrote in a tweet this morning, accompanied by a report that police denied rape charges.

The 20-year-old was reportedly assaulted by four men from her village on September 14. She died two weeks later after sustaining horrific injuries in a savage assault that many have compared to the 2012 gang rape in the nation’s capital.

The UP government has been criticized for handling the case and a late night cremation where his family was reportedly not allowed. The police, meanwhile, filed 19 FIRs (First Information Reports) – not against the defendants – but against “strangers” for a plot to defame the state government.

Last week Mr Gandhi visited the victim’s family, two days after being arrested by UP police as he was walking towards Hathras. Dramatic visuals showed him in a fight with UP cops; he was pushed and fell to the ground.

The central government, meanwhile, on Saturday reminded state and UT governments of existing laws for “mandatory police action in crimes against women.”
