Raju said he was pleased to learn that PM Modi had praised him

Pathankot:

A 37-year-old man of different abilities, who was praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his radio program “Mann Ki Baat”, said on Sunday that he had always tried to help the needy.

Raju, a beggar, was praised by Prime Minister Modi for distributing 3,000 masks and providing food to 100 families in distress during the closure period.

He said he was happy to hear that Prime Minister Modi greeted him.

“I always try to help people in need,” said Raju, who lives near the road to Dhangu.

Raju, who uses a hand-held tricycle, collected 75,000 rupees by begging and spent the total amount to distribute masks and ration to the poor during the closed season.

“I have no family and no house. I spent all the money collected begging during the lockout,” said Raju, who suffers from polio.

One time, he spent 15,000 rupees from his own pocket to repair part of a road over a drain.

“Despite the complaints, the administration paid no attention to it, but it did,” said Dinesh Beri, a trader on the road to Dhangu.

A number of accidents were taking place due to the rough road, he said.

Raju said he had also provided financial assistance for the marriage of women from poor families.
