PM Modi was scheduled to attend yoga day in Leh, but this is now doubtful due to COVID-19

New Delhi:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to participate in an International Yoga Day program on June 21 in Leh, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, his trip there is questionable, AYUSH said.

In March, AYUSH ministry officials said that Leh in Ladakh will be the main event of International Yoga Day on June 21 and that Prime Minister Modi will attend.

However, asked if the Prime Minister would participate in a Yoga Day event this year keeping in mind the COVID-19 pandemic, AYUSH secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha told the news agency Press Trust of India that “it was not decided yet”.

He also said that this year’s Yoga Day will be celebrated on digital media platforms.

“It has not yet been decided whether the Prime Minister will participate in a program. Earlier it was decided that he would go to Leh, but now due to the COVID-19 crisis, he has not yet been decided whether to go to Leh or not, “the official told the PTI news agency.

“The main event will be a big event, but it will be digital,” he said, adding that the modalities are still being worked out.

Given the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s International Yoga Day will be celebrated on digital media platforms and there will be no mass rallies, the government said.

This year’s theme will be “Yoga at Home and Yoga for Families”. People will be able to join the Yoga Day celebrations virtually at 7 a.m. on June 21.
