Ahmedabad:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today advised trainee officials to make decisions in the national interest following the mantra of “minimum government and maximum governance”.

Speaking to IAS interns via video conference, Kevadiya in Gujarat, where he paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhai Patel on his 145th birthday earlier today.

Prime Minister Modi told the interns they are entering the service at a crucial time when India is about to enter the 75th year of its independence.

“A government doesn’t just work on policies. The people for whom these policies are intended must be involved. People are not the recipients of government policies and programs. They are the real driving force,” he said .

“We must therefore move from government to governance,” he added.

You will be confronted with two ways, one of comfort, name and fame, the other of struggle, difficulties, problems. But I can tell you from my experience that you will run into real difficulties when you choose the easy way out, ”he said.

“At the turning point the country finds itself in today, the role of you bureaucrats is that of minimum government, maximum governance. You have to make sure how to reduce your interference and also ensure the empowerment of ordinary people,” did he declare.

“I would also like to ask that any decision taken by an official is in the national interest and is aimed at strengthening the unity and sovereignty of the country and keeping India’s constitutional spirit high,” the prime minister said.
