New Delhi:
The United States will vote for its next president on Tuesday, November 3. However, more than 97 million Americans have already voted by mail and advance polls in person, according to a tally from the University of Florida’s US Elections Project. . Postal voting is high this election due to the coronavirus pandemic, posing labor, technical and legal challenges in thousands of electoral jurisdictions, each with their own procedures and rules. The latest opinion polls show a close race between President Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Joe Biden. Mr Biden, 77, leads national polls and most of the battlefield, but President Donald Trump has insisted they are wrong and he will repeat his upset victory of 2016.
Vote and count
Most states will begin voting at 6:00 a.m. EST (4:30 p.m. IST Nov. 3). Most polling stations on the East Coast will open Tuesday at 6:00 or 7:00 (11:00 or 12:00 GMT). The count will begin as soon as the vote is completed in a particular state. The results are also announced publicly. This means the East Coast is starting to count while the vote in the West may not be over. Officials in many states, such as Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania – all key states where the outcome is unpredictable – have said that counting the large number of postal votes could take at least another day and possibly three days.
