A pregnant leopard died on Sunday after being struck by an unidentified vehicle near the town of Kashimira in Mira Bhayandar township, Thane district, Maharashtra, an official said.

The incident occurred on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway shortly after midnight on Saturday, he said.

“A female leopard was found seriously injured on the highway around 12:30 p.m. Sunday. The animal was brought to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park Leopard Rescue Center (SGNP) by staff,” said G Mallikarjun, curator in chief of forests of the SGNP.

“However, the leopard died of injuries at 2:15 a.m. during treatment. The autopsy was conducted by a team of vets in the afternoon, which confirmed that the death was due to a strong mechanical impact. which led to multiple fractures and muscle damage, ”he says.

The leopard was discovered to be pregnant and carrying three fetuses, the official said.
