Chennai:
The “thirsty for power” Congress government took away the rights of the people 45 days ago that day, and when the same party spoke of democracy it was scary, the leader said on Thursday. BJP and Minister of Finance, Nirmala Sitharaman.
Recalling that the emergency came into force in India on June 25, 1975, she said, it was imposed by the “Congress Party, hungry for power and they created a huge challenge for democracy by creating the ’emergency”.
The emergency continued until March 21, 1977.
Addressing workers of the BJP Unity Party in Tamil Nadu via a virtual rally, she said: “The rights of the people have been completely rejected. Why did the Congress party do it? wanted power, it was power. The law was broken and a state of emergency was declared. “
The emergency era witnessed several atrocities, she said, and said that several opposition leaders had been imprisoned and that the DMK government led by former chief minister M Karunanidhi had been sacked.
DMK leader Mayor Chittibabu died from torture in prison, she said.
“The fact that Congress has the courage today to speak of democracy is agonizing,” she added, adding that the DMK had joined Congress afterwards, however.
“By what right does the DMK have the right to ask questions about freedom of expression and democracy?” she says.
