Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his cabinet colleagues and several BJP leaders today paid tribute to Shyama Prasad Mookerjee on the occasion of his 119th birthday. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee was an academician, politician and lawyer who founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the predecessor of the Bhartiya Janata Party or BJP.

Interior Minister Amit Shah, in his tribute to Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, said: “His efforts to make Kashmir an integral part of India will always be remembered. He will continue to inspire people for his sacrifice for the maintenance of the unity and integrity of India “.
BJP National Chief JP Nadda, in his speech, said that the ideals of Shyama Prasad Mookerjee were “a unique blend of regional aspirations and national unity”. Nadda said that Shyama Prasad Mookerjee had inspired the abolition of section 370 and section 35A, and sowed the seeds of development in Jammu and Kashmir through his slogan. “Ek desh mein do vidhaan, do nishaan, do pradhaan nahin chalega (A country cannot have two constitutions, two leaders and two national emblems).
Union Minister Babul Supriyo paid tribute to Shyama Prasad Mookerjee and wrote: “… his unconditional devotion and his ultimate sacrifice for the integrity and sovereignty of India will be remembered”

Shyama Prasad Mookerjee was part of the cabinet of Jawaharlal Nehru but he had resigned after the differences were accentuated with this last on the pact of Liaquat. With the help of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, he founded Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951. Shyama Prasad Mookerjee was also president of Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha from 1943 to 1946.
