AstraZeneca considered a pioneer in the race to produce a vaccine (dossier)

London:

The COVID-19 vaccine developed by the University of Oxford produces an immune response in the elderly and young and the side effects were weaker in the elderly, British drug maker AstraZeneca Plc said on Monday. A vaccine that works is seen as a game changer in the battle against the novel coronavirus, which has killed more than 1.15 million people, hammered the global economy and shut down normal life across the globe

The Financial Times reported that the vaccine, developed by Oxford and AstraZeneca, triggers protective antibodies and T cells in older age groups

Immunogenicity blood tests performed on a subset of older participants echo data released in July that showed the vaccine generated “robust immune responses” in a group of healthy adults aged 18 to 18. 55 years old, the newspaper reported.

“It is encouraging to see that the immunogenicity responses were similar between older and younger adults and that the reactogenicity was lower in older adults, where the severity of COVID-19 disease is higher,” said an AstraZeneca spokesperson told Reuters.

“The results strengthen the body of evidence for the safety and immunogenicity of AZD1222,” the spokesperson said. Details of the discovery are expected to be published soon in a clinical journal, the FT said. He did not name the post.

AstraZeneca, which is developing the vaccine with researchers at the University of Oxford, is seen as a pioneer in the race to produce a vaccine to protect against COVID-19.

UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock said a vaccine was not yet ready as he prepared logistics for a possible deployment.

He said he expected the deployment to take place in the first half of 2021.
