India has registered 40,425 new cases of coronavirus and 681 deaths in the past 24 hours, in the biggest jump of a day, government data showed this morning. The new cases put the total for India, the nation with the third-highest number of COVID019 cases, at 11,18,043. The latest deaths bring the total number of deaths to 27,497. The country’s recovery rate – the number of patients who have successfully battled viral disease – stood at 62.61% this morning. 7,00,087 people have recovered, the Ministry of Health said. Maharashtra reported the highest number of cases, followed by Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

Maharashtra reported its largest increase on new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday at 9,518, bringing the state’s balance sheet to 3 10,455. While Mumbai reported 1,038 new cases, Pune reported more than 1,800 cases, bringing the city’s toll to nearly 40,000 cases. After senior ministers of the Maharashtra government, such as Jitendra Ahwad, Ashok Chavan and Dhananjay Munde, the Minister of Guardians and Congress Chief of the city of Mumbai, Aslam Shaikh, tested positive for COVID-19. Mr. Shaikh announced on Twitter that he was asymptomatic and self-isolated. He also advised those who came in contact with him to be tested.

Tamil Nadu reported a new one-day record of 4,979 new cases of COVID-19 when the overall count exceeded 1.70 lakh in the state. Cases in the capital Chennai now appear stable – with 1,200 new cases – after a full three-week foreclosure. However, the three neighboring districts of Chennai and Madurai in southern Tamil Nadu continue to see a peak in cases of coronavirus.

So far, Uttar Pradesh has registered 49,650 cases. Capital Lucknow is seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases, a concern enough for many parts of the city declared to be “large containment areas” for a week starting this morning. The neighboring town of Kanpur, about 80 km north of Lucknow, also has a very worrying pandemic situation with the highest number of deaths in the state for a single district. Kanpur, with 120 dead, passed the western UP hotspots of Agra and Meerut in the death tally. The two districts killed more than 90 people.

Karnataka on Sunday recorded 4,120 new cases of COVID-19, the day’s biggest one-day pandemic peak in the state, bringing the total number of people infected with the deadly virus to 63,772 in the state, according to government data. The total number of deaths in the state has reached 1,331, with 91 deaths in the past 24 hours. Of the more than 4,000 new cases in the state, 2,156 were from the city of Bengaluru alone.
