India is the country with the third highest number of coronavirus cases in the world.

India on Thursday recorded the biggest peak of the day with 26,506 cases of coronavirus, bringing the total to 7.93,802, according to data from the Union’s Department of Health this morning. With 475 new deaths, the number of deaths increased to 21,604. Maharashtra reported the highest number of cases, followed by Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana. To date, 4,95,513 patients across the country have recovered, bringing the recovery rate to 62.42%. India is the country with the third highest number of coronavirus cases in the world after the United States and Brazil.

  1. Maharashtra continues to face a shortage of vital medicines such as remdesivir and tocilizumab which have been effective in the treatment of COVID-19. The state government has said it is tackling the shortage and has contacted suppliers to increase the supply. On Thursday, 6,875 people tested positive for coronavirus in Maharashtra, bringing the total number of cases to 2,30,599.

  2. Tamil Nadu, with 1,26,581 cases to date, has the second highest number of coronavirus cases after Tamil Nadu. The capital Chennai represents 58.2% of cases in Tamil Nadu. While Chennai has seen a decrease in the number of cases, Madurai has seen a fivefold increase in COVID-19 cases in the past 16 days.

  3. Delhi on Thursday recorded 2,187 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the infection to more than 1.07 lakh, while the number of deaths due to the disease rose to 3258. The Minister of the Interior of the Union held a meeting by videoconference to examine the management of the situation of COVID-19 in the capital.

  4. A lockout will be imposed in Uttar Pradesh from 10 p.m. tonight to Monday morning due to the spiraling of COVID-19 cases in the state. Only essential services will be allowed during the foreclosure, said the state government. It is the first time the state government has implemented a global lockdown since the center began lifting restrictions in May.
