Wellington:
New Zealand said Tuesday it has two new cases of coronavirus, both linked to recent trips from the United Kingdom, ending a 24-day streak with no new infections in the country.
New Zealand lifted all social and economic restrictions except border controls last week after declaring that it has no new or active cases of coronavirus, one of the first countries in the world to return to pre-pandemic normality.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, however, warned that new cases may arise in the future as New Zealanders return home, and that others are allowed to enter special conditions.
The Department of Health said the new cases were linked to the border following recent trips from the UK. The two cases are linked, he said in a statement.
More details were expected at a press conference on Tuesday.
New Zealand has so far killed 22 people due to the virus.
