Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh:
An elephant’s fossil was discovered in the Siwalik sediments exposed near the Badshahi Bagh area in the Saharanpur of Uttar Pradesh.
The fossil is said to be between five and eight million years old and comes from the Dhok Pathan formation of the Siwalik chain.
“We found a fossil of a Stegodon, a variety of elephant that was found at an early age. The fossil comes from the Dhok Pathan formation of Siwalik. The estimated age of the specimen can vary from five to eight million years, “VK Jain, chief forest curator, Saharanpur told ANI.
Jain said the fossil was found a week ago, but it was only after verification by the Wadia Institute that they were able to declare the specimen found as a relic.
“We consulted the Wadia Institute and a scientist told us that this fossil is a deposit of the Middle Ages. It is the first fossil of its kind and we would like to preserve it and increase our research because if we could find the fossil, it is possible to find more, “he said.
“This is a huge success for us and we would like to increase the number of scientists in the study to find more fossils,” added Jain.
