Russia said on Saturday it had registered more than 10,000 deaths.

Moscow:

Russia said on Saturday that it had recorded more than 10,000 deaths from the coronavirus pandemic, a figure that is still far below that of other countries where the epidemics are significant.

The death toll reached 10,027, the government website said, up 168 from Friday.

Russia has confirmed 674,515 cases, the third largest in the world, although the daily infection rate has decreased in the past month.

The number of deaths in the country is much lower than in other countries with high epidemics, which raises questions about the possible underreporting of deaths.

Russia has acknowledged that the number of deaths on the government website only includes cases where the virus has been listed as the leading cause of death on the death certificate.

The official statistics agency released national death data for the month of April alone, where the number – of 2,712 – was more than double the government total of 1,152 for that month.

Indeed, it uses a broader definition based on the recommendations of the World Health Organization and includes cases where the victim has tested positive but the virus has not been classified as the main cause of death, or where there was no positive test but an autopsy ruled on the virus was the main cause of death.

The Moscow city health department also released data on deaths in May using this classification method, showing 5,260 virus-related deaths this month.

In contrast, the government website still says that some 3,929 people in total have died to date from the virus just in Moscow.
