Mexico City, Mexico:

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Friday appointed the country’s first female security minister to coordinate the fight against drug cartels and other criminals.

Lopez Obrador offered the job to Rosa icanda Rodriguez, who currently oversees seaports and merchant shipping, after Alfonso Durazo resigned to run for the presidency of the state of Sonora.

Rodriguez, a former journalist and close ally of Lopez Obrador, has yet to officially accept the role as she recovers from the coronavirus, the president said.

Lopez Obrador gave Rodriguez responsibility for overseeing ports in July as part of a strategy to tackle drug trafficking, smuggling and corruption in customs.

As Minister of Security, she would face one of the most complex jobs in the cabinet, in a country plagued by organized crime and cartel violence.
