Brisbane, Australia:

A surfer died after being attacked by a three-meter shark on a popular beach off the east coast of Australia, police said on Sunday.

The man was surfing at Kingscliff, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of Brisbane, Sunday morning when the shark mutilated his leg.

“The police were informed that several snowboarders came to his aid and fought the shark before the injured man could be helped ashore,” the police said in a statement.

“He received first aid for serious injuries to his left leg but died at the scene.”

Police said the man had not yet been officially identified but was believed to be a 60-year-old man from the state of Queensland.

His death is the third known deadly shark attack Down Under this year.

Australia has one of the highest rates of shark attacks in the world, but deaths are rare.

There have been 27 attacks but no deaths off the coast of Australia last year, according to data from the Taronga Zoo in Sydney.
