New Delhi:

A man, wearing a cash reward of Rs 25,000 on his head, was arrested following a brief encounter with police in Lado Sarai on Thursday evening, officials said.

In a joint operation with the Meerut police, the Delhi Police Special Cell arrested 36-year-old Azmal, aka Pahari.

The accused, from Mazaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, was wanted in a 2019 extortion case registered at the Nazibabad police station in Bijnor district, officials said.

For the past four months, Azmal has been living in a rented house in Mehrauli to escape arrest, a police official said.

“We received information that Azmal would be approaching the Lado Sarai area between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., so a raid team made up of Special Cell personnel and a team from STF Meerut who were already at Delhi set a trap on the spot. The accused was spotted on a bicycle, he was cornered and asked to surrender, but he opened fire on the police “, said the deputy commissioner of police (special cell) Pramod Singh Kushwah.

The official said the police team also opened fire in self-defense and that Azmal was injured in the right leg. He was immediately taken to Safdarjung hospital for treatment.

A pistol with six live rounds was recovered from the accused, Kushwah said.

A case was registered in this regard under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Weapons Act at the police station of the special cell, he said.

Azmal was previously involved in nine criminal cases, including murders and extortion, at the UP.
