Thursday, Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, a senior IPS officer, took office as the new police commissioner for Chennai.

Aggrawal said at a press conference that containing the spread of the coronavirus is one of the top priorities for the Chennai police.

He also said the noose would be tightened against the town’s ripped chains and cellphones.

“For cybercrime, we will take a new SOP according to the instructions given by our DGP,” he said.

“The women who patrol specially will be reinforced in the coming days around the city,” he added.

Mr. Aggarwal took office at the office of the Commissioner of Police, Vepery, in the presence of senior police officials. He has been the 106th Chennai Police Commissioner since 1856.
