Maharashtra’s Interior Minister Anil Deshmukh met with Shantabai Pawar, an 85-year-old woman whose stick fight video went viral on social media and has garnered praise from internet users on Saturday.
Ms. Pawar played “lathi-kathi“- a traditional Indian martial art – on the streets of Pune during confinement to earn money for her family, which includes orphaned children she has taken into her care.
“I had the privilege of meeting Shantabai Pawar, 85, the #WarriorAaji of #Pune, at her home. I have heard many people talk about how she exercises for a living. I felt inspired and refreshed upon meeting her and offered her Nawari saree & Rs 1 Lakh on behalf of the Party, ”Anil Deshmukh tweeted.
After her video went viral, several people came forward to help, including movie actor Riteish Deshmukh who called her an “aaji warrior” (warrior grandmother) on a microblogging site and the contacted.
“The ‘Bharosa Pune Police Cell demonstrated a fine example of humanity in serving the 15,000 elderly in our society during the lockdown. I am also convinced that the ‘Bharosa Cell ‘will continue to help people in the days to come,’ Deshmukh said in another tweet.
