A 27-year-old attendant at a COVID-19 quarantine center in Thane district of Maharashtra has been arrested for allegedly raping a woman at the facility, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place in June, but came to light on Saturday when the 20-year-old woman complained to the police, Inspector Sampat Patil of Navghar Police Station said.

The woman in her complaint alleged that the defendant committed the offense while treating an 11-year-old relative who had been accommodated at the quarantine center, located in the Mira Road area, the official said.

Police said the woman was staying in a room in the facility with her 10-month-old daughter to care for the parent who tested positive for coronavirus.

The accused visited the room at night under the pretext of providing hot water. He allegedly made advances to the woman, but she resisted his decision as a result of which he threatened to kill her child, Sampat Patil said.

He allegedly raped the woman in the room three times in the first week of June, the official said.

The woman did not approach the police at that time, as she feared the accused would harm members of her family.

She lodged a police complaint on Saturday as a result of which the accused was arrested and a case was registered against him under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (rape) and other relevant provisions, a declared the responsible.
