L’Oréal’s products include Garnier Skin Naturals full white multi-action equity cream.

L’Oréal, the world‘s largest cosmetics company, will remove words referring to “white”, “fair” and “light” from its products for the evening, a spokesperson said Friday, one day after Unilever made a similar announcement in the face of growing criticism of social media.

Unilever and L’Oréal are two major players in the global market for skin whitening creams used in many countries in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean where fair skin is often considered desirable.

Unilever, in particular, came under fire for its brand “Fair & Lovely” in an era of global focus on racial injustice after weeks of protests sparked by the May death of George Floyd, a black man, in police custody in the USA.

Johnson & Johnson went further by stating that it would stop selling skin whitening creams sold in Asia and the Middle East under its brand Neutrogena and Clean & Clear.
