Japanese police arrested university student (representational) on Thursday

Tokyo:

Japanese police arrested a university student on Thursday suspected of killing two family members with a crossbow and injuring two others in a rare violent crime in the country.

Police in Takarazuka city, near Osaka, in western Japan, said they had detained the 23-year-old student, identified as Hideaki Nozu, at the scene of the incident in a residential area.

Two women in their 40s and 60s were confirmed dead, while two others – also family members – were injured and sent to hospital, a police official told AFP.

“The details, including the reason, are under investigation,” said the official.

The man is said to have confessed to saying, “I have killed several members of my family”.

Local media said the police were alerted when a woman called, saying, “My grandson shot me with an arrow.”

The two victims appeared to be his mother and grandmother, according to reports.

Violent crimes are extremely rare in Japan and weapons are strictly controlled.
