The CBI today arrested a Jammu and Kashmir police officer after filing a lawsuit against him in a Jammu court for the alleged murder of his wife over an unmet dowry request, officials said.

The wife of Jammu and Kashmir police inspector Vivek Bassan, Neha Kumari, was found dead on February 26, 2018, gunshot wounded by her husband’s service pistol, they said.

The High Court of Jammu and Kashmir handed the case over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which resumed the investigation on March 26, 2019, officials said.

During the investigation, the CBI also found that an officer from the Jammu and Kashmir police station and a ballistic expert allegedly played a role in the alleged concealment of Mr. Bassam’s role and the translation. of a suicide case, about which an investigation is underway, they told me.

“During the investigation, an alleged plot was also revealed to manipulate evidence to reflect the incident as suicide,” said CBI spokesperson RK Gaur.

The agency, after resuming the investigation, used its sophisticated forensic expertise and reconstructed the crime scene, which revealed the murder, officials said.

The CBI further alleged that the woman was subjected to cruelty as a result of the dowry request and had been murdered by her husband using his service pistol.

“Based on the evidence gathered during the investigation, the CBI arrested the accused on May 29, 2020. The accused was brought before the CJM, Jammu, and placed in pre-trial detention,” said Mr. Gaur .
