Tehran:
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday that the next US administration had the opportunity to “make up for its previous mistakes” following Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election.
“There is now an opportunity for the future US administration to make up for its previous mistakes and return to the path of respecting international commitments,” Rouhani said in a statement posted on its official website.
US President Donald Trump, who lost Tuesday’s election to Democratic challenger Biden, has applied a policy of “maximum pressure” and crippling sanctions against Iran since his 2018 withdrawal from a landmark nuclear deal with Tehran .
The reimposed sanctions targeted Iran’s oil industry and vital banking ties, among other sectors.
The nefarious and mistaken policies of this US administration over the past three years have not only been condemned by people around the world, but have also been opposed by the people (of the US) in the recent elections, ”said Rouhani .
He added that the “heroic resistance of the Iranian people against the economic war imposed” by the Trump administration “has proved that America’s policy of maximum pressure is doomed.”
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Tuesday that the outcome of the US election would “have no effect” on Tehran’s policy toward Washington.
Biden has said during his campaign that he plans to embark on a “credible path of return to diplomacy” with Iran, and raised the possibility of reverting to the 2015 nuclear deal, negotiated when he was vice president of Barack Obama.
