Iran promotes constructive interaction with the world: President Hassan Rouhani

Dubai:

The Iranian president said on Sunday that the next US administration should take the opportunity to make up for the mistakes of President Donald Trump, Iranian state television reported after Joe Biden took over the US presidency.

Tensions have skyrocketed between the United States and Iran since 2018, when Trump walked out of a nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers and then reimposed sanctions that crippled the Iranian economy.

“Trump’s damaging policies have been fought … by the American people. The next American administration should take the opportunity to make up for the mistakes of the past,” President Hassan Rouhani said.

“Iran promotes constructive interaction with the world.”

Biden has pledged to join the 2015 Iran nuclear deal with six powers, a deal that was struck by Washington when he was vice president, if Tehran also returns to compliance.

In retaliation for Trump’s actions, Tehran has gradually reduced its commitments to the agreement. But Iranian religious leaders have said the measures are reversible if Tehran’s interests are respected.

“The heroic resistance of the Iranian people has proven that the policy of maximum pressure is doomed to failure,” said Rouhani.

Biden said the return to the deal would be “a starting point for follow-up negotiations” and that Washington would then work with its allies to strengthen and extend the nuclear deal and resolve other issues.

Iranian leaders have so far ruled out discussions aimed at further curbing Tehran’s nuclear activity, halting its ballistic missile program, and limiting the Islamic Republic’s regional influence.

“The American people have spoken. And the world is watching whether the new leaders will abandon the disastrous and lawless intimidation of the outgoing regime – and accept multilateralism, cooperation and the rule of law. Actions matter most,” tweeted the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.
