Karachi:

Investigators and rescuers found about 30 million rupees in cash in the wreckage of the Pakistan International Airlines plane, which crashed with 99 people on board, killing 97 people, including nine children.

Flight PK-8303 from Lahore to Karachi crashed Friday in a residential area near Karachi International Airport, with only two passengers who miraculously survived the accident.

Investigators and rescue officials have found foreign currency and denominations worth about 30 million rupees in the plane’s wreckage, an official said on Thursday.

“An investigation was ordered into how such a sum of money passed through airport security and baggage scanners and ended up in the unfortunate flight,” said the official.

He said the amount was recovered from two bags in the wreckage.

“The process of identifying the bodies and their baggage to be handed over to their families and relatives is continuing,” he said.

A total of 97 people, including the plane’s crew, died in the crash, one of the most catastrophic air disasters in Pakistan’s history.

A government official said on Thursday that the identification of 47 bodies had been completed, while 43 bodies had been handed over for burial.

Friday’s accident was the first major plane crash in Pakistan after December 7, 2016 when a PIA ATR-42 plane from Chitral to Islamabad crashed halfway. The accident claimed the lives of 48 passengers and crew, including singer-evangelist Junaid Jamshed.
