An influential Pakistani Sunni Muslim cleric was shot dead with his driver by unidentified assailants in the city of Karachi, according to media reports.
The alleged targeted attack on Maulana Dr Adil Khan, leader of the Jamia Farooqia Seminary in Karachi, took place on Saturday, the Dawn News reported, citing police officials.
Mr. Khan was the son of the late scholar Maulana Saleemullah Khan, who founded the Jamia Farooqia, a seminary located in the settlement of Shah Faisal. Jamia Farooqia adheres to the Sunni Muslim teachings of the Deobandi sect.
According to a police statement, as the car carrying Mr. Khan stopped near a shopping center in Shah Faisal settlement to buy candy, armed passengers indiscriminately opened fire on the car and pulled themselves over. run away.
Mr Khan was transferred to Liaquat National Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival, hospital spokesman Anjum Rizvi said as quoted by Dawn.
Its driver, Maqsood Ahmed, was also pronounced dead upon arriving at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC), hospital executive director Dr Seemin Jamali said.
A third person, Umair, who also accompanied the researcher, survived the incident as he entered the mall to buy candy, Geo News reported.
Police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon said three men were on motorcycles. One came down and fired the shots.
“We are collecting eyewitness statements,” he said, quoted by The News International.
According to Raja Umar Khitab, head of the Counterterrorism Department (CTD), the attack is “a conspiracy to incite sectarian violence”, according to the report.
