Baby is the second COVID-19 patient to die in Meghalaya, officials say

Shillong:

An eight-month-old baby who traveled about 400 km from Arunachal Pradesh to Meghalaya via Assam for treatment died a few hours after being tested positive for coronavirus, officials said on Tuesday.

The little boy was referred to the Indira Gandhi Northeast Regional Institute for Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) of the Tomo Riba Institute for Health and Medical Sciences in Arunachal Pradesh for treatment of certain diseases, they said.

His parents took him to Shillong by road. They arrived at the hospital on Monday morning.

“Upon arrival, the baby’s swab samples were collected and sent for testing. The baby tested positive for COVID-19 and died later that evening,” said the Minister of Health for Meghalaya, AL Hek.

However, his parents and their driver tested negative for the disease, he said.

The baby is the second COVID-19 patient to die in Meghalaya, officials said. The first death in the state was recorded on April 15.

To date, the state has reported 89 cases of COVID-19. Of these, 44 are on treatment and 43 have recovered, in addition to the two deaths.

Among the active cases, 22 were detected at the BSF headquarters in the city.
