India has so far performed more than 10 million (1 crore) tests to diagnose COVID-19, said officials of the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), as coronavirus cases reached 6, 97,413 in the country.
In the past 24 hours, about 1,80,596 samples have been tested on July 5 in the country, with a total of 1,004,101 samples have been tested to date, said the official.
An ICMR official said, “In the past 14 days, average tests have been 2.15 lakh (2 15,655), and in the past five days, 1 million tests have been performed, respectively.”
In an effort to increase testing capacity, the ICMR has approved approximately 1,105 COVID-19 testing laboratories in the public (788) and private (317) sectors. This includes RT-PCR laboratories (592); TrueNat Labs (421) and CBNAAT Labs (92).
“The ICMR advises all state governments, public and private institutions to take the necessary steps to step up testing for COVID-19. Since testing, monitoring and treatment are the only way to prevent spreading infections and saving lives, it is imperative that the tests should be widely available to all symptomatic people in all regions of the country and the contact tracing mechanisms to contain the infection should be strengthened, “said the ICMR latest advice on COVID-19 strategies.
Our testing capacity has been increased by more than 3 lakh per day thanks to government and private laboratories, said the official.
So far, the number of COVID-19 tests performed by the top five states that have increased their test speed includes – Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
The ICMR recommended that all laboratories and hospitals begin testing with the rapid antigen test to ensure that all symptomatic negative patients are primarily referred to a real-time RT-PCR test for COVID-19 .
Recently, the ICMR wrote to all states and UT saying that all private laboratories in their region that intended to launch TrueNat / CBNAAT-based tests for COVID-19 should be encouraged to request NABL accreditation for guarantee quality testing.
COVID-19 count in India has approached the 7 lakh mark with 6,97,413 cases after 24,248 new cases have been reported in the past 24 hours, said the Ministry of Health and Welfare Union.
According to the Ministry of Health, there are 2,53,287 active cases in the country while 4,24,432 patients have been cured or discharged, while one patient has migrated.
No fewer than 425 new deaths have been reported in the past 24 hours in the country due to COVID-19, bringing the number of patients who died from the deadly virus to 19,693.
