India highlights cross-border terrorism and connectivity block at ASACR meeting

S Jaishankar spoke about three key challenges that SAARC must overcome

India addressed the issue of cross-border terrorism at the informal meeting of ASACR foreign ministers, which took place virtually on the sidelines of the UNGA this year.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Anurag Srivastava said Jaishankar told the meeting that over the past 35 years, ASACR has made significant progress, but collective collaborative efforts and prosperity had been hampered by acts of terrorism.

EAM said it was crucial to take a collective resolution to defeat the scourge of terrorism, including the forces that nurture, support and encourage it.

“At the ASACR Council of Ministers meeting today, EAM S Jaishankar said:“ Over the past 35 years, ASACR has made significant progress. But our efforts for collective collaboration and prosperity have been hampered by acts of terrorism and threats to national security, ”said Mr. Dit Srivastava.

“Such an environment hinders our common goal of realizing the full potential of our collective enterprise. It is therefore essential that we decide collectively to defeat the scourge of terrorism, including the forces that nurture, support and encourage it. This will generate what we so much need confidence and confidence to collectively build a stronger and prosperous SAARC ”, he added.

Mr. Jaishankar also referred to India’s support for its neighbors in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (ASACR), including the Maldives, Bhutan and Sri Lanka.

“Highlighted India’s support to our ASACR neighbors; Extension of USD 150 million currency swap support to Maldives; USD 200 million currency swap support to Bhutan USD 400 million to Sri Lanka during of this year, ”he said in a tweet.

India argued that talks and terror cannot go hand in hand accused Pakistan of blocking the functioning of the ASACR by blocking connectivity and sponsoring terrorism.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi also took part in the meeting.

The foreign ministers of Maldives, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan also took part in the virtual meeting hosted by Nepal. Increased collaboration in the fight against COVID-19, connectivity and commerce was also discussed during the meeting.
