India crosses 2.35 Lakh COVID-19 and overtakes Italy for 6th place

India has more than 1 lakh of active coronavirus cases across the country.

The number of coronavirus cases in India rose to 2.35 lakh Friday, bringing the country sixth in the world above Italy, while the death toll has surpassed 6,600, according to data from state governments and from the American Johns Hopkins University. In terms of cases, India crossed China – where the virus emerged late last year – for ninth place just a week ago.

The number of states with counts of four digits or more has doubled since May 1, when the center authorized the movement of migrant workers on special trains from large urban groups to their villages. Some of these states have seen their total increase by more than 10 times.

In its latest update on Friday morning, the Department of Health said that the number of confirmed cases had risen to 2,266,770 and the number of deaths had risen to 6,348. Figures from Johns Hopkins University around midnight showed India with 2.35,769 and Italy with 2.34.531. India ranks 12 with 6,641 deathse most affected country.

Although the number of recoveries has increased to more than 1.12 lakh, India still has more than 1 lakh of active cases across the country. The cases have been increasing sharply, by 8,000 or more, for several days.

The count showed that at least 19 states now have their confirmed case counts in four or more digits, up from just nine on May 1. In addition, three states now have five-digit counts, compared to only Maharashtra in this category on May 1. .

While Delhi and Gujarat already have their five-digit counts, at least three other states – Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh – have a total of more than 9,000 confirmed cases.

Maharashtra tops the ranking in terms of the total number of confirmed cases, active cases, recoveries and deaths. Delhi is in second place in terms of active cases, although it is third after Tamil Nadu in terms of total number of cases. Gujarat is ranked second for deaths, followed by Delhi in third place.

Central and state governments are currently reducing restrictions in place since March 25 as part of a national foreclosure.

Among various states, Uttar Pradesh on Friday recorded its biggest one-day jump with 496 cases of COVID-19, bringing its number to 9,733, while another 12 people died from the disease to bring the number to 257.

Maharashtra reported 2,436 new cases, bringing the total to 80,229, while the death toll rose to 2,849 after the death of 139 people from viral infection.

In Gujarat, another 510 people tested positive and 35 died, bringing the number of confirmed cases to 19,199 and the number of deaths to 1,190.

A record increase was also recorded by West Bengal, where 427 new cases brought the total to 7,303.

Karnataka also recorded its highest peak in a single day, with more than 500 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of infections in the state to 4,835.

On Friday, Tamil Nadu recorded 1,438 new cases and 12 deaths, bringing the number of cases to 28,694 and deaths to 232.

Kerala recorded its first three-digit push for a single day with a count of 111 to reach 1,699. Nearly 1.77 lakh people are under observation in the state.
