It is true that BM Vijay Shankar was found dead at his home, said the police (Representative)

Bengaluru:

An IAS officer, whom the CBI wanted to prosecute in the Ponzi IMA scam at 4,000 crore rupees, was found dead at his home on Tuesday evening, said a senior police officer.

Police said the former deputy commissioner of the Bengaluru urban district, BM Vijay Shankar, was found dead at his Jayanagar residence in Bangalore.

“It is true that he was found dead at his home,” said the PTI officer, without giving further details.

Vijay Shankar has been charged with accepting a bribe to quell the IMA ponzi scheme.

He was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the coalition government led by HD Kumaraswamy in 2019.

Later, when the BJP government came to power in the state, it turned the matter over to the CBI.

Recently, the CBI asked the state government for permission to prosecute Shankar, as well as two others, in the case after questioning them, agency sources told PTI.

The agency also asked the state government for permission to prosecute two senior IPS officers in the case.

Promising high yields, Mohammad Mansoor Khan started the ponzi scheme in 2013.

An investigation by the CBI showed that the entities of the IMA group led by Khan had raised illegal and unauthorized deposits in an alleged dishonest and fraudulent manner from innocent investors to the tune of more than Rs 4,000 crores, which raised the eyebrows of the tax department and the RBI.

The highest bank had written to the state government to probe the operation of the IMA.

Subsequently, the government asked Vijay Shankar to submit a report on the IMA.

Vijay Shankar entrusted the task of preparing the report to the assistant commissioner of the district of Bangalore, LC Nagaraj.

It is alleged that Vijay Shankar and Nagaraj took Rs 1.5 crore through an accountant from the Manjunath village to quell the alleged misdeeds of Khan.

The story came to light when Khan fled to Dubai, leaving behind a video message saying he was committing suicide because of “corruption in the state and central governments”.

Khan was arrested on July 19 of last year when he arrived in New Delhi.

With him, seven directors of the IMA, a corporator and a few others were arrested by SIT.
