President Ram Nath Kovind agreed to change the name of the HRD ministry to the education ministry

New Delhi:

On Monday, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the name change of the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) as the Ministry of Education, according to an official notification.

The name change was among the main recommendations of the draft New National Education Policy (NEP), which was also approved by the Union’s cabinet last month.

A notice published in the gazette on Monday evening said the president had nodded to change the name of the HRD ministry to the education ministry.

The head of the Ministry of Human Resources Development takes the place of the Ministry of Education, he said.

The Ministry of Education was renamed the Ministry of Human Resources Development in 1985 during the tenure of then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The NEP was introduced the following year and was subsequently amended in 1992.

Fr. V Narasimha Rao became the prime minister of HRDs in the Rajiv Gandhi cabinet.

A panel led by former ISRO president K Kasturirangan, tasked with working on the new NEP, initially proposed that the name of the ministry be changed again.

In 2018, the idea was also brought up by Ram Bahadur Rai, president of the Indira Gandhi National Arts Center and also chair of the joint organizing committee of the Academic Leadership Conference on Education for Resurgence.
