A man found in possession of a Hong Kong independence flag has become the first person to be arrested under Beijing’s new national security law, police said on Wednesday.

“A man was arrested for waving a #HKIndependence flag in #CausewayBay, Hong Kong, violating #NationalSecurityLaw,” police wrote on his verified Twitter account next to a photo of the man and the flag.

“This is the first arrest since the law came into force,” added the force.
