There was a gaping hole in the roof of Ghazanchetsots (Saint-Sauveur) cathedral.

Shusha, Azerbaijan:

Armenia said on Thursday that Azerbaijani forces shelled a historic cathedral in the Nagorno-Karabakh city of Shusha, where AFP journalists saw the church suffered severe damage.

There was a gaping hole in the roof of Ghazanchetsots (Saint Savior) Cathedral, an iconic site of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

Rubble was strewn on the floor, benches were overturned, and the interior was covered with dust from parts of the building’s limestone walls that had been hit. Part of its metal roof had collapsed and fell to the ground outside.

“The enemy of Azerbaijan has struck the symbol of Shushi – Ghazanchetsots Cathedral,” Armenian Defense Ministry spokesman Artsrun Hovhannisyan told Telegram, using the city’s Armenian name.

“There are no military, nothing strategic here, how can you target a church?” Simeon, a local resident who lives near the church, told AFP.

“It is a very important cathedral for Armenians … God will be the judge.”
