IMD said the monsoon would likely move north gradually toward the Himalayan foothills from July 18.

New Delhi:

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) announced heavy rain in north and northeast India on Friday and issued a red warning for West Bengal, Assam and the Meghalaya from July 19 to 21.

He also issued a red warning for Arunachal Pradesh from 19 to 20 and an orange alert for July 21.

The expected rains are expected to further exacerbate the flooding situation in Assam, where more than 39.8 lakh people in 27 of the 33 districts of the state were affected by the deluge as of Thursday, he said.

The total number of people who lost their lives in this year’s state floods and landslides has risen to 102. While 76 people have died in flood-related incidents, 26 have been killed in landslides field, according to a state government bulletin.

An orange alert was also issued from July 19 to 20 for Uttarakhand, Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

The IMD said the monsoon is more likely to gradually move north toward the Himalayan foothills from July 18.

In addition, the convergence of humid winds from the south and southwest of the Bay of Bengal over northeast and adjacent eastern India and from the Arabian Sea over northwest India at tropospheric levels lower is very likely from July 18.

As a result, the distribution and intensity of precipitation will most likely increase in the north and northeast of the country from July 18 and 19 respectively.

Isolated heavy to very heavy falls are most likely in northern India from July 18 to 20 and in northeast India from July 18 to 21.

Extremely heavy falls are also very likely in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam and the Meghalaya from July 19 to 21 in Arunachal Pradesh from July 19 to 20, said the IMD.

This could worsen existing flood conditions and lead to landslides in parts of the northeastern states and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, the statement said.
