Uddhav Thackeray’s statement comes amid nationwide outrage over the death of a 19-year-old woman.

Thane:

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said on Thursday that Hathras-type incidents would not be tolerated in the state and those who engaged in crimes against women would be severely treated.

Her statement comes amid nationwide outrage over the death on Tuesday of a 19-year-old Dalit woman from Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, days after she was raped by four men on September 14.

Uddhav Thackeray was speaking as he virtually inaugurated the new Police Commissioner Mira-Bhayandar Vasai-Virar.

“When incidents like the one that happened at the UP happen, we usually discuss it for a while and then forget. But in Maharashtra, such incidents will not be allowed,” he said. .

“Hathras-type incidents will never be tolerated in Maharashtra. Besides, any type of crime against women, including harassment and mockery, would be severely dealt with,” the chief minister said.

There should be a fear of the police and they should crush criminal activity in the area, he added.

“The maintenance of order must be such that even though police personnel are present everywhere, they are not visible, but people feel safe,” Uddhav Thackeray said.

He observed that the need to create a separate police station for Mira Bhayandar and Vasai-Virar was long overdue.

State DGP Subodh Jaiswal said the 1935 Maharashtra Police Manual has not been revised and a new version is awaiting government approval.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said the proposal for the new police commissioner had remained on paper during the previous government and had been implemented by the MVA government.

Home Secretary Anil Deshmukh said Rs 25 crore would soon be allocated to the new police station.
