Chandigarh:

A Haryana businessman reportedly faked his own death so his family could claim insurance, police said three days after picking up a charred body from his car and the family told him he was killed for 11 lakh of rupees.

Police say they have located businessman Ram Mehar (35) living in Chhattisgarh and are now investigating to identify the person whose body was found in the burning car in Hansi on Tuesday evening.

Earlier, the police had registered a case on the complaint of Ram Mehar’s family.

Based on this complaint and the recovery of the severely charred body in the vehicle, police said unidentified assailants burned the businessman to death after looting 11 lakh in cash in the Haryana neighborhood. in Hisar.

The incident sparked a strong reaction from opposition parties and Congress declared that there was a “raj jungle” in Haryana, ruled by the BJP.

Police Commissioner Hansi Lokender Singh told PTI on Friday: “During the investigations we obtained vital clues on the basis of which we tracked Ram Mehar to Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh on Friday. We are bringing him here.”

“He fabricated the detail of his death and the looting incident,” he said.

Asked if the person whose body was found inside the burning car had been identified, Mr Singh said: “We are carrying out further investigations. After Mehar, who is now accused , will be brought back, it will be questioned intensely and other facts will emerge. “

Asked why Ram Mehar could have taken such a step, Mr Singh said: “During our investigations so far it has emerged that he had two insurances in his name and the sum insured in one. was Rs 1 crore and Rs 50. lakh in another. His family would have received the amount in the event of death. This probably seems to be the reason for the whole incident.

To a question, he said it also emerged that his business was not performing well and that he could likely be in debt, but further investigation would shed light on this issue.

Mr Singh said he would not like to comment at this point when asked if a family member was being scanned in the case or how police obtained vital clues leading to the breakthrough.

He said police previously filed a complaint based on the family’s statement.

“He had called the family by phone saying that some people were following his car and were concerned that they wanted to loot the amount he was carrying and might cause him harm.

“The police immediately intervened and we found the car on fire and a badly charred body. Later on, we investigated the case from the point of view of dacidity and murder, ”he said.

On Tuesday evening, Ram Mehar, a resident of Data village on the Bhatla-Data road in Hansi, was driving home in his car.

Police said earlier that the attackers stopped his car, then looted it and set the car on fire after locking him inside.

Police citing the family said Ram Mehar owned a disposable cup and plate factory in Barwala and was arriving at Data village from Hisar after withdrawing 11 lakh from a bank.
