Lucknow:
Contrary to the perception that the elderly and children are the most vulnerable to COVID-19, data released by the government of Uttar Pradesh show that more than half of its coronavirus patients are between 21 and 40 years old – its young population.
With 7,884 cases, this age group comprises 51.93% of all cases in the state, where the recovery rate is 60.85%, which is significantly higher than the average for the whole of ‘India by 52.95%.
The next age group with the highest number of coronavirus cases was between 41 and 60 years of age, with 30% of cases. So far, about 900 seniors – just over 6% – have contracted the coronavirus in Uttar Pradesh.
The state’s trend – where young people are as likely to contract the disease as the elderly – is different from that seen in other countries, where the elderly have shown a higher probability of contracting a coronavirus due to lower immunity.
However, it should be noted that, according to the findings of the World Health Organization, the vulnerability of patients is based not only on their age, but also on underlying medical conditions, such as high blood pressure, heart and lung problems, diabetes or cancer.
“Seniors and those with underlying health conditions were more at risk of developing serious illness … About 1 in 5 people who get COVID-19 become seriously ill and have trouble breathing. Most people (about 80%) recover from the disease without needing hospital care, “says WHO.
In view of the declining immunity of the elderly and children, the Government of India has also published a notice calling people over 65 and children under 10 “vulnerable” and urging them not to travel only when necessary.
India has reported 12,881 cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours in the biggest peak of the day, government data showed that the highly infectious disease has killed 334 people in the past 24 hours.
India has so far reported 3.66,946 cases of coronavirus, of which 1,943,325 have recovered and one patient has migrated.
To date, 12,237 people have died. Samples of 62,49,668 people have been tested across the country. As of Wednesday, at least 1,65412 were tested and 7.78% of them tested positive.
