Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday launched an argument for the production of “swadeshi” (indigenous) and said imports should stop, while exports should increase.
He also suggested the creation of an “import substitution and export oriented department” with separate funds earmarked for this purpose.
The top BJP leader said the department should work on the principles of “swadeshi” and “swavalamban” (autonomy) and guide the economy.
He was speaking at a virtual program hosted by Swadeshi Jagran Manch, in which companies that did not lay off workers during the coronavirus-induced lockdown were praised.
“I think imports should stop and exports should be increased through the promotion of import substitutes,” he said.
Mr Gadkari said that an alternative fuel economy worth Rs 5 lakh crore could be created through rural participation.
He went on to inform the gathering that the turnover of village industries had increased from Rs 80,000 crore last year to Rs 1 lakh crore and that the goal was to take it further to Rs 5 lakh crore soon.
