Paris:

More than 12 million coronavirus infections have been recorded worldwide, more than half of them in the United States and Latin America, according to an AFP count of official sources Thursday at 09:55 GMT.

At least 12,063,425 cases and 549,451 deaths have been recorded, the number of infections having doubled since May 31. About half of the people who caught the virus have recovered.

With 3,055,101 cases and 132,309 deaths, the United States is the most affected country, Brazil second with 1,713,160 cases and 67,964 deaths.

Counts probably only reflect a fraction of the number of infections because many countries only test the most severe cases.
