New Delhi:

Seasoned diplomat Gaitri I Kumar has been named India’s next high commissioner to the United Kingdom, the Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday.

Ms. Kumar, an Indian foreign service officer in 1986, succeeds Ruchi Ghanashyam.

Currently, Ms. Kumar is Indian Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the European Union.

“She is expected to take office soon,” said the foreign ministry.

His appointment to this high-level post comes at a time when India plans to tighten its ties with the United Kingdom after its exit from the powerful European Union.

During her career of more than 30 years, Ms. Kumar has served in several Indian missions, notably in Paris, Kathmandu, Lisbon and Geneva.

She was also co-secretary of the Americas division at the headquarters of the ministry in Delhi.
