Former Delhi chief secretary M Kutty was appointed chairman of the Commission for the management of air quality in the national capital region and adjacent areas on Thursday, according to an order from the personnel ministry.
Professor Mukesh Khare, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi and Ramesh KJ, former director general of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) have been appointed full-time technical members of the Commission, he said.
Arvind Kumar Nautiyal, deputy secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change will be the full-time member of the panel, the order said.
They were appointed for a three-year term, when they took over the post, or until the age of 70, he said.
In response to increasing air pollution in Delhi-NCR, the Center introduced a new law on October 29 through an ordinance that sets up a powerful oversight body and provides for up to five years in prison and Rs a fine of 1 crore for violators with immediate effect.
Mr. Kutty, a 1985 IAS agent from the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union Territories or AGMUT executive, retired as petroleum secretary in April of this year. He was also chief secretary of Delhi
