A senior Telugu Desam party official and former Andhra Pradesh minister, K Atchannaidu, and five others were arrested today by anti-corruption bureau officials for their alleged involvement in the ESI medical shopping “scandal” crore Rs 150 under the previous regime, a senior ACB official told me.
While Mr. Atchannaidu was arrested from his residence in Srikakulam district, former directors of the employee insurance company (ESI) C Ravi Kumar and G Vijay Kumar were arrested in Tirupati and Rajamahendravaram respectively, said the ACB deputy director Ravi Kumar to journalists in Visakhapatnam.
A joint director of ESI Janardhan, Superintendent Chakravarthy and a senior assistant were arrested in Vijayawada.
Mr. Atchannaidu was Minister of Labor in the previous TDP government led by Chandrababu Naidu when the scandal allegedly took place in the purchase of drugs and medical equipment.
“The Vigilance and Law Enforcement Department investigated ESI purchases between 2014 and 2019 and found large-scale irregularities. Our investigation also found a scam of 150 crore rupees in the purchase medicines, medical kits, furniture and other items. As a result, we made these arrests, “said the ACB’s joint director.
