Kabul, Afghanistan:
A former Afghan television presenter and two other civilians were killed in a bomb explosion in Kabul on Saturday, police said in the latest violence in the city.
Yama Siawash was killed when a bomb attached to his vehicle exploded near his residence in the Afghan capital, police spokesman Ferdaws Faramarz told reporters.
Siawash, who had recently joined the Afghan central bank as an adviser, was once a prominent political and current affairs presenter for Tolo News, the country’s largest private television station.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but many prominent figures, including journalists, clerics, politicians and rights activists, were killed in targeted attacks in Kabul and other cities in the context of increasing violence in the country.
Siawash’s death was immediately condemned by senior Afghan officials.
“Targeting journalists is aimed at freedom of expression and Siawash’s death is a great loss for our country,” Abdullah Abdullah, who heads the country’s comprehensive peace and reconciliation process, said in a statement.
“It is an unforgivable and unforgettable crime.”
Sediq Sediqqi, a spokesperson for President Ashraf Ghani, also condemned the murder of “one of the most talented (television) presenters” in Afghanistan.
Violence has exploded across Afghanistan in recent months, despite the Taliban and the Afghan government engaging in peace talks to end the long-running conflict in the country.
On Monday, a deadly terrorist raid on Kabul University left 22 people dead, many of them students.
ISIS claimed that the attack, which took place just days after a suicide bombing near an education center in Kabul killed 24 people.
