Strong points

  • “I hereby resign from Bollywood,” said Anubhav Sinha
  • “Bollywood was, Hindi movies will,” tweeted Anubhav Sinha
  • Sudhir Mishra and Hansal Mehta have also “left” Bollywood

New Delhi:

Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, Tuesday night, announced in a tweet that he “resigned” from Bollywood. But what exactly drove Mr. Sinha to make the decision seems uncertain, but his tweet suggests he’s “had enough”: “Enough! I’m hereby resigning Bollywood. Whatever that means.” In the following tweets, Mr Sinha wrote: “Bollywood was, Hindi films will be.” Anubhav Sinha’s tweets sum up the emotion that he has disassociated himself from the term “Bollywood” but will continue to be a part of the Hindi film industry, making critically acclaimed films like himself. The filmmaker even changed his Twitter profile name to “Anubhav Sinha (Not Bollywood)”.

Anubhav Sinha’s “resignation” tweet was preceded by similar tweets from fellow filmmakers Sudhir Mishra and Hansal Mehta. “Bollywood chhodo (leaves Bollywood), “Mr. Mishra tweeted, to which Hansal Mehta replied:”Chhor diya (have stopped). It never existed in the first place. In their tweets, Anubhav Sinha, Sudhir Mishra and Hansal Mehta named film legends whose work inspired them to become filmmakers – Satyajit Ray, Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt, Ritwick Ghatak, Bimal Roy, Mrinal Sen, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, K Asif, Vijay Anand, Javed Akhtar, Tapan Sinha, Gulzar, Shekhar Kapur and Ketan Mehta were on the list. They also praised new era filmmakers such as Anurag Kashyap, Nikkhil Advani, Neeraj Ghaywan and for making Indian cinema. “

Anubhav Sinha is best known for directing films such as Audience Drama Mulk, Article 15 – a film on caste discrimination and marital drama Thappad, each of which is a blunt critique of pressing social issues.
