Washington:
The United States has recorded fewer than 400 coronavirus-related deaths in 24 hours for the second consecutive day, according to a count on Monday by Johns Hopkins University.
There were 385 new deaths at 8:30 p.m. (12:30 a.m. Tuesday), said the Baltimore University tracker, after a 24-hour toll on 382 the day before.
This is the lowest daily death toll since late March, although the data tends to be weaker at the end of the weekend.
The United States is by far the country hardest hit by the pandemic, with both the highest number of deaths, 116,114, and the most infections with more than 2.1 million, the tracker showed. .
The country, where many companies are reopening, continues to register around 20,000 new cases of coronavirus every day and more than a dozen states are recording their highest levels of new cases since the start of the pandemic.
Such is the situation in Oklahoma, where President Donald Trump has scheduled an election rally on Saturday. He dismissed appeals from the city of Tulsa not to increase the risk of coronavirus and said he wanted to triple the crowd to 60,000 people.
